Coach Positions


Chief of Race

  • Directs/ controls work of all race officials
    Responsible for overall running of race

  • Summons meetings of Race Committee for all technical questions

  • Serves as Race Jury Member and holds deciding vote

  • Does not set the course

  • Grants provisional reruns

Referee

  • Represents all racers and coaches at jury meetings

  • Main area of reasonability is to check race course for safety and appropriateness for ability level of the racers. After this is accomplished the referee opens the course for inspection.  In the event the ref decides a change needs to be made he has the full authority to do so.  It is best to show the course setter what was changed and why.

  • Voting member of the jury

  • Grants provisional reruns

  • Posts the referee report on the score board with DQ’s as soon as race is complete.

  • Does not set the course.

Assistant Referee

  • Reasonable for all the referee duties should the ref not be able to perform them.

  • In WJR we do not have a Technical Delegate so the Asst Ref is a voting member of the jury

Course Setter – Slalom

  • Distance from turning pole to outside pole should be 4-6 meters.

  • Minimum of 3 vertical combinations using hairpins and flushes.

  • Minimum distance between gates in combinations is .75 meters.

  • Vertical combinations (flushes or hairpins) turning pole to turning pole is 4-6 meters- use 6 meters, measure!!! Don’t guess, be consistent.

  • Vertical combinations can be set on flatter terrain to maintain speed, to indicate a terrain change or to direct the racer across the hill.

  • Open gates  (turning pole to turning pole) should be 10-14 meters (12 to 14m is recommended), max is 15 meters

  • Be consistent!!! If you start with 14m, stay with 14m.

  • Set your course rhythmically down the fall line.

  • Set the first gate straight down the fall line from the start, set your last gate to direct the racer to the center of the finish.

  • Offset is determined by the steepness of the hill.

Course Setter-Giant Slalom

  • Turning pole to outside pole 4-8 meters, use 8 if you can

  • Set rhythmic course down the fall line with equal distance from turning poles.

  • Set turning pole to turning pole 18 to 24 meters (18 to 20 m is best for class 5/6) be consistent.

  • Set the first gate straight down the fall line from the start, set your last gate to direct the racer to the center of the finish.

  • Offset is determined by the steepness of the hill.

  • Set safe and be aware of fall zones.

Parent Volunteer Positions


 

Start Referee/ Starter

  • The area around the starting gate is the responsibility of the Start Ref.

  • The Start Ref is responsible to make sure each racer gets a fair start and that all rules and regulations are observed.

  • Start Ref communicates with the timing hut as to when the next racer can start.

  • The Start Ref helps keep the race ramp clear except for racers in line and coaches.

Assistant Starter

  • The main job to call out the race order and help get the racers lined up.

  • The Assistant Starter fills in for the starter in the event the starter cannot fulfill their job.

  • The Assistant Starter also helps keep the ramp area clear except for racers in line and coaches.

Finish Referee

  • The Finish Ref controls the finish area and keeps it clear and safe at all times.

  • The Finish Ref makes sure each racer has the opportunity to finish in a fair manner.

  • The Finish Ref makes sure all rules that apply to the finish are met by each racer.

 

Note:  All provisional reruns (those that are disputed and need a jury meeting after race) can only be granted by Chief of Race, Referee and Assistant Referee.  Reruns due to timing problems can be granted by any race official.

Chief Gatekeeper

  •  Attends worker meeting & assists with assigning gatekeeper positions and the distribution of buckets/equipment (turners, DQ cards, pencils, clipboard).

  • Insures all gatekeepers are in position prior to race start and all subsequent runs.

  • During & at the end of each run, picks up the DQ cards from the gatekeepers and takes them to the finish referee at the bottom of the course.

  • Answers questions for the gatekeepers & helps with course maintenance.

Timing Leader

  • Responsible for all timing equipment (laptops, printer, Tag Heuer timer, start wands & finish eyes/tripods) for respective course including bringing equipment to each race with charged batteries.

  • Sets up & maintains the racer roster list in the timing computers for the season

  • Directs & assists local hill workers to set up timing equipment prior to each race.

  • Prints four copies of the “racer run orders” and has these ready for the 8:30 race workers meeting. Class 1-4 only – 2nd run “run order” reports need printing after the 1st run is complete (run order changes from the 1st run).

  • Responsible for running the timing equipment during the races to accurately record all racers times.

  • Directs the Starter Referee to start/hold each racer in the start gate.

  • At the end of both runs, prints race results

  • Directs & assists local hill workers with the packing up of all timing equipment

  • Provides assistance to the Race Jury as needed to resolve any scoring conflicts.

Timing Backup

  • Assists the Timing leader with all of their responsibilities.

  • If needed, can fill in for the Timing Leader.

  • Should be able to perform all Timing Leader responsibilities.

Official Results Keeper

  • Works with the Timing Leader & Backup as directed to help setup timing equipment & prepare for the start of the race.

  • Manually records each racers time on paper to serve as a backup to the electronic timing/scoring system.

  • Coordinates with the Scoreboard Relay person to facilitate getting the times communicated via radio to the scoreboard scribers.

Scoreboard Relay

  • Relays finished racer times via radio to the scoreboard scribers.

  • Communication should be short & clear: Bib #, Name, Time

  • Alert the scoreboard scribers when changing between gender & classes; Girls Class 6, Boys Class 6, Girls Class 5, etc.
